What is there to know about evaporative coolers (swamp coolers)?

Evaporative Coolers (Swamp Coolers)

A portable evaporative cooling air conditioner, or swamp cooler, is a low-cost, low-tech alternative to central air conditioning in arid regions of the country. Here is some important information about evaporative air coolers:

  • Swamp coolers combine air movement with evaporation by blowing fresh, outdoor air through a wet material to lower temperatures.
  • There are different sizes of evaporative air coolers. Small units can be installed in a window, while larger units are fitted to ductwork to blow air throughout a building.
  • Swamp coolers are rated by how many cubic feet of air can be blown through a space in one minute (CFM).
  • To get the right CFM rating for the size of your building or room, divide the square footage of a space by two.
