What is there to know about kitchen ventilation ductwork?

Exhaust Ventilation and Ductwork

If you're getting ready to install a house exhaust fan for bathroom or kitchen ventilation, here are some helpful tips on installation and ductwork:

  • First, read the manufacturer's instructions for the products you wish to install.
  • Follow safety precautions.
  • Before working with electricity, turn off the power at the service panel.
  • Make sure your ductwork is properly fitted. If you're using new ductwork, check for the right fit. Mismatched ductwork can change the static pressure load.
  • Buy metal ductwork for kitchen exhaust and use duct tape on the joints.
  • Avoid bends and turns in the ductwork. Aim for a straight path.
  • A 90-degree angle in ductwork equals approximately 10 linear feet. Keep ductwork as short as possible.
  • Replacing a fan with a new one is easy if you buy the same size to fit the existing opening.
  • If you're installing a new fan, you'll need to cut a hole in the ceiling. Make installation easy by using the existing ceiling light fixture. You can replace the light with a fan/light combo.
  • If you're unsure about installation, hire a professional to do the job right.
